About Sarah Hauptman
Sarah Cade Hauptman is a Minnesota gun rights advocate who describes herself as a liberal gun owner, a perspective that has made her a frequent voice on the point that the right to keep and bear arms is not a partisan issue. She did not grow up around firearms; she became involved in gun culture after taking a shooting class around 2013 and has since written pro-gun opinion pieces, testified at legislative hearings and served as a team leader and volunteer with the Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus. She is also a member of the Minnesota chapter of the Liberal Gun Club, moderates an online community for gun owners and is involved in a Minnesota holster business.
In a March 2021 Minnesota Reformer report on the surge of new and left-leaning gun owners during the pandemic, Hauptman said she expected to face discrimination as a liberal in gun circles but “actually encountered the opposite.” She opposes most gun control laws and compares gun rights to bodily autonomy. The Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus, based in Saint Paul, describes its mission as defending the right to keep and bear arms in Minnesota without compromise and has been a lead plaintiff in Worth v. Jacobson, the case over carry rights for young adults.
