About the Numbers
Gun Shops adds active Type 01 dealer licenses and Type 02 pawnbroker licenses from the ATF Report of Active Firearms Licenses, March 2026. A dealer license covers storefront shops, gunsmiths and home-based dealers alike, so the count runs higher than the number of retail storefronts.
Pawn Shops are pawnbrokers licensed to deal in firearms (Type 02). Some states, including Massachusetts, New Jersey, Hawaii and Vermont, show none.
NFA Dealers are Special Occupational Taxpayers registered as Class 3 dealers, the shops that can sell suppressors, short-barreled rifles and other NFA items. These figures are for tax year 2024, from ATF’s Firearms Commerce in the United States, Annual Statistical Update 2025. A business with more than one location may be counted once per location. ATF publishes no SOT figures for Puerto Rico.
All FFLs counts every active license type in the state, including collectors of curios and relics (Type 03), manufacturers and importers. Guam (12 dealers), the Northern Mariana Islands (3) and the U.S. Virgin Islands (8) are in the national total but not on the map.
History uses one ATF Report of Active Firearms Licenses per year, the January report where one was available (February for 2016 and 2019, August for 2017, March for 2021 to 2023 and 2026). NFA dealer history is not shown; that view stays on tax year 2024.
