About Michael Schwartz

Michael Schwartz is the Executive Director of San Diego County Gun Owners (SDCGO), a nonpartisan 527 political action committee focused solely on Second Amendment issues in San Diego County. After volunteering in local gun rights work since 2008, he announced the PAC on October 21, 2015, arguing that local government is where many state and federal policies begin and that county gun owners needed a dedicated voice at city councils, school boards and the Board of Supervisors. SDCGO rates and endorses local candidates, including for sheriff, and does not endorse at the state or federal level.

Under Schwartz, SDCGO runs women’s and new-shooter programs, training, monthly Shooting Socials and an annual Second Amendment Celebration Dinner, and it has served as a plaintiff in several lawsuits in partnership with the Firearms Policy Coalition. The group’s advocacy helped change San Diego County’s restrictive approach to concealed carry permits and helped keep gun stores open during COVID-19 restrictions in 2020. Its model has been used to launch sister organizations, including Orange County Gun Owners and Inland Empire Gun Owners, and Schwartz co-hosts the weekly Gun Owners Radio program.
