About HeyJackass!
HeyJackass! is a Chicago crime data site that launched on January 25, 2013. Its creators started it because violence statistics for the city were hard to find in one place, and it has published daily tallies of people killed and wounded ever since. The site first tracked homicides only, then added shootings as a more complete measure of violence, with reliable non-fatal shooting data from January 1, 2014.
Along with running totals, it breaks down victims by cause, age, sex, race and neighborhood, and its year-end summaries are widely cited in discussions of urban crime. Its name for the numbers, “Chicago values,” borrows a phrase from former Mayor Rahm Emanuel. For the period from 2013 through 2023 it reports 7,078 people killed and 30,161 wounded.
