About Charles Daly

Charles Daly is one of the longest-running names in imported sporting firearms. New York City merchant Charles Daly and his partner August Schoverling built a business importing fine guns, chiefly from makers in Suhl, then part of Prussia. A third partner, Joseph Gales, joined and the firm traded as Schoverling, Daly and Gales, and by about 1875 the guns carried the Charles Daly name. Published histories differ on the earliest dates: some place the start of the partnership in 1865. Early guns came from respected makers such as Heym, Sauer and Lefever, and the brand became associated with high-quality double shotguns and drillings.

Over the following century the trademark changed hands many times, passing to Henry Modell in 1919, the Walzer family of Sloan’s Sporting Goods in the late 1920s, Outdoor Sports Headquarters in 1976 and KBI, Inc. in 1996. During the Walzer years Beretta and Bernardelli built Daly guns, and Miroku of Japan made Daly over-and-under shotguns from the mid-1960s to the mid-1970s, models still sought by collectors. KBI added AR-15 rifles under Charles Daly Defense in 2008 before closing in January 2010. In 2017 Chiappa Firearms of Italy acquired the trademark and reopened Charles Daly in Dayton, Ohio, keeping the name alive on shotguns and other firearms.
