About Gun Facts
Gun Facts is a research project founded by Guy Smith that answers common claims in the gun control debate with sourced, footnoted data. It began as a personal cheat sheet Smith wrote after noticing a gap between national claims about gun violence and what he saw at home; requests for copies grew into a distribution list and then a long-running project. The materials are published nearly copyright free so that anyone can share them, and charts can be reused as long as they are not altered.
The project says it accepts no institutional money from either pro-gun or anti-gun groups and runs on individual donations. Smith, whose academic background is in public policy and sociology, also wrote Guns and Control (2020), a nonpartisan guide covering mass public shootings, accidents, crime, public carry, suicide and defensive gun use, and Shooting the Bull, a tutorial on spotting propaganda in the gun debate.
