About the Texas State Rifle Association
The Texas State Rifle Association (TSRA) is an independent nonprofit organization, affiliated with and recognized by the National Rifle Association as its Texas state association. According to resolutions adopted by both chambers of the Texas Legislature, TSRA was established in 1919 with the primary goal of promoting rifle shooting through training and competition within Texas and against similar organizations nationwide. Headquartered in Austin, it has grown to about 35,000 members and remains committed to firearm skill development, youth participation, safety training, traditional hunting and Second Amendment rights.
Competition remains central to TSRA’s mission. In cooperation with the NRA, it sanctions state matches each year in more than 20 shooting disciplines, and state champions can advance to national competition. Youth shooting and safety programs supported by the association operate through 4-H, the Boy Scouts of America, the American Legion, the National High School Rodeo Association and ROTC. For decades TSRA monitored legislation from the outside, but it established an active presence at the Texas Capitol in 1985, when lobbyist Doc Brown advocated for a statewide firearms preemption bill and a hunter harassment bill, both signed by Governor Mark White. In 2019 the Texas House and Senate each adopted resolutions honoring TSRA’s 100th anniversary and its contributions to the legislative process.
