Amateur Trapshooting Association

is the National Governing Body for ATA-type trapshooting. The ATA hosts the Grand American Trapshooting tournament at Vandalia, Ohio in August each year. The “Grand” attracts the most shooters of any shooting event held in the USA.

About the Amateur Trapshooting Association
The Amateur Trapshooting Association (ATA) is the governing body for American-style trapshooting. Its roots go back to the Interstate Association, an organization of gun and powder makers that ran the sport’s early tournaments; the American Trapshooting Association replaced it in 1919, and amateur shooters took control of the sport in 1923. Bandleader John Philip Sousa served as the first president of the American Trapshooting Association.
The ATA’s signature event is the Grand American, which began in 1900 and moved between cities until 1924, when the association built a permanent home in Vandalia, Ohio. The Grand American moved to the World Shooting and Recreational Complex in Sparta, Illinois, in 2006, and the ATA moved its offices there in 2012. The Trapshooting Hall of Fame, founded in 1968 with its first inductions in 1969, moved its museum to Sparta in 2016. For shotgun shooters, the ATA’s registered targets, handicap yardage system and annual averages remain the standard for competitive trap across the United States.
