About STRIDE Adaptive Sports
STRIDE Adaptive Sports is a nonprofit organization in New York’s Capital Region whose mission is to educate and empower individuals with disabilities through sport and recreation programs that support healthy, active lifestyles. It grew out of Project STRIDE, a ski program that founder Mary Ellen Whitney started at the Ichabod Crane School District in Valatie, New York, in 1984-1985. STRIDE incorporated as a nonprofit in 1991 and now runs year-round programs that range from snowsports, sled hockey and wheelchair basketball to swimming, bowling, golf and archery. Since 2019 it has operated the SHARE Center, a community fitness and education facility at its headquarters in West Sand Lake.
Shooting sports are part of that work. STRIDE’s Warfighter Program offers injured service members integrated activities that include marksmanship, along with snowsports, sled hockey, watersports, cycling and camping. For gun owners and range operators, STRIDE is an example of how adaptive equipment and trained volunteers can open target shooting to athletes with disabilities. STRIDE became a Paralympic Sport Club in 2009 and marked its 40th anniversary with a Founder’s Gala in 2025. Whitney stepped back from day-to-day management in 2023-2024 while continuing as Snowsports Director, and Alex Brame now leads the organization as Executive Director.
