About the Gunsmithing Club of America
The Gunsmithing Club of America (GCA) is a membership community for people who want to understand how firearms are designed, how they function and how to repair them, with an emphasis on practical, real-world gunsmithing. According to this profile, GCA has operated since 2010, is based in Napa, California, and was created by the American Gunsmithing Institute (AGI), a gunsmithing training company.
AGI was founded in 1993 by Gene Kelly, who believed many aspiring gunsmiths could not afford the time and cost of a traditional two-and-a-half-year college program. Kelly and his mentor, master gunsmith Bob Dunlap, spent more than two years filming AGI’s core program, which runs about 108 hours of video and teaches Dunlap’s “design, function and repair” methodology for centerfire rifles, shotguns, pistols and rimfire rifles. By 2019 AGI reported thousands of graduates, and eligible veterans with a service-connected disability rating of 30 percent or more could have their gunsmithing education and tools covered by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
