About the New Jersey Second Amendment Society
The New Jersey Second Amendment Society (NJ2AS) is a nonprofit civil rights organization working to protect the right to keep and bear arms in one of the most restrictive states in the country. It grew out of a kitchen-table meeting of ten people organizing a response to how New Jersey’s legislative, executive and judicial branches treated gun owners, and it officially became NJ2AS on July 12, 2010, with Frank Jack Fiamingo serving as its early president. By its third anniversary the group reported thousands of members and supporters, along with a project called Operation Establish Compliance that pressed local police departments to drop unlawful requirements from firearms permit applications.
NJ2AS is best known for litigation. In April 2011 it sued the New Jersey State Police under the Open Public Records Act for the investigation guide used to process Firearms Purchaser Identification Cards and pistol permits. In 2015 a court ordered release of a redacted version and awarded fees, and the state paid NJ2AS $101,626.59 in legal fees. In November 2020 NJ2AS joined the Firearms Policy Coalition and Second Amendment Foundation in Bennett v. Davis, a federal challenge to New Jersey’s carry permit system and its “justifiable need” standard, and on December 22, 2022, minutes after New Jersey enacted new carry restrictions following the Bruen decision, it joined SAF, FPC and others in filing Koons v. Reynolds. For New Jersey gun owners, NJ2AS remains a leading in-state advocate.
