About Safari Club International

Safari Club International (SCI) is one of the best-known hunting rights and wildlife conservation organizations in the world. It grew out of a California hunting club formed in 1971 and was incorporated as a nonprofit under the Safari Club International name in 1972. Founder C.J. McElroy and a group of fellow hunters built it into an international federation of local chapters. For decades the group was run from Tucson, Arizona, where its International Wildlife Museum opened in 1988 and served as headquarters. SCI opened a Washington, D.C., office on Capitol Hill in 2002 and moved its headquarters to Washington in 2018.

For hunters and Second Amendment supporters, SCI matters mainly for its advocacy work. It lobbies on hunting access, wildlife management and the import of legally taken game, and it files friend-of-the-court briefs in major cases. The U.S. Supreme Court cited an SCI amicus brief in United States v. Stevens (2010). Its sister charity, now the SCI Foundation, funds conservation and education programs, and the annual SCI Convention is one of the largest hunting trade shows in the world.
