About Quality Deer Management Association

The Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA) was founded in South Carolina in 1988 by wildlife biologist Joe Hamilton. Its purpose was to promote Quality Deer Management, an approach that balances deer herds with their habitat. The approach encourages hunters to let young bucks walk, harvest enough does to keep herds healthy and work with neighboring landowners. Over three decades QDMA grew into one of the most influential deer hunting groups in the country. It was later based in Bogart, Georgia, and its staff of biologists produced research, educational materials and policy positions on deer disease, habitat and hunting access.

Visitors should note that QDMA no longer operates under that name. In July 2020, QDMA and the National Deer Alliance, an advocacy group incorporated in 2015, announced that they would merge. The combined group launched as the National Deer Association (NDA) in November 2020. Nick Pinizzotto, who had led the National Deer Alliance, became president and CEO of the merged group. The NDA carries on QDMA’s education, research and advocacy work for deer and deer hunters.
