About Michigan Gun Owners
Michigan Gun Owners (MGO) is a not-for-profit grassroots organization dedicated to educating the public on safe, responsible gun ownership and to defending the right to keep and bear arms under both the Second Amendment and Article I, Section 6 of the Michigan Constitution. Founded on November 30, 2002, the group has been described as one of the three largest firearms rights organizations in Michigan and hosts an online forum that connects gun owners across the state. MGO also runs community programs, including free home firearm safety classes for children and parents offered to churches, scout troops, neighborhood associations and businesses.
MGO has worked alongside other Michigan groups on legislative priorities. In October 2013 it joined the Michigan Coalition for Responsible Gun Owners (MCRGO) and Michigan Open Carry in a Second Amendment March on the State Capitol in Lansing, where more than 200 advocates lobbied for eliminating pistol free zones, concealed pistol license reform, pistol registry protections and legalizing short-barreled long guns. MGO also brought the lawsuit Michigan Gun Owners, Inc. v. Ann Arbor Public Schools, challenging district policies that barred firearms on school property. In July 2018 the Michigan Supreme Court ruled 4-3 that the districts in that case and a companion Clio case could keep their policies. As of 2026 the organization remains active, holding member events and publishing reference material on Michigan firearm law.
