About Brooke Cheney

Brooke Cheney is a Connecticut firearms instructor and the founder of A Great Start Shooting School, a women-run training school on a private outdoor range in Harwinton, Connecticut, that teaches women, men and children. Although she grew up around guns, she has described leaving the range for years without knowing how to load, unload or even hit a target with the guns she was handed. In 2007 she decided she needed real training to keep her household safe, and that decision eventually led her to teach others.

Cheney founded the school in 2014 and holds credentials as an NRA certified instructor, NRA training counselor, range safety officer and IDPA safety officer, and she also competes. The school offers Connecticut’s state-required pistol permit class, a Gun Handling and Shooting course, a Find Your Perfect Gun class for first-time buyers, and private lessons that progress from safe loading and unloading to drawing from a holster and shooting on the move. Her focus on new shooters, especially women, and on preventing firearm accidents through education reflects a core argument of the 2A community: that safe, informed ownership starts with good training. The school reports more than 500 students trained.
