About Challenged Sportsmen of America
Challenged Sportsmen of America, Inc. (CSA) is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in McAllen, Texas, that gives physically (mobility) challenged men and women the chance to hunt and fish in the Rio Grande Valley. Its signature event is the annual “Wing & Water Weekend,” a weekend of dove hunting, fishing and camaraderie spread across Hidalgo, Cameron and Willacy counties of South Texas. Each challenged hunter is encouraged to bring one able-bodied family member or friend, and the group describes the event as family focused, with some participants hunting alongside their sons and daughters for the first time.
All events are free to participants. Hotel rooms, food, shotgun shells and door prizes are paid for by donations from local businesses and individuals and by fundraisers, landowners donate access to their land, and volunteers will loan a shotgun to hunters who fly in or cannot bring their own. Participants are screened and matched with a volunteer so the shooting is done safely; hunters need a valid Texas hunting license, while Texas Parks and Wildlife grants the event a fishing license exemption. For gun owners, CSA is a working example of how the hunting community keeps the outdoor tradition open to disabled sportsmen. The organization remains active as of 2026.
