About Gun Digest

Gun Digest is a long-running American firearms publishing brand. Chicago’s Follett Publishing Co. released the first Gun Digest annual book in 1944, and the annual, billed as “The World’s Greatest Gun Book,” has been published ever since, with feature articles and a catalog of firearms on the market. John T. Amber was its longest-serving editor, from 1951 to 1979, and the John T. Amber Literary Award, first presented in 1962, still honors the best writing in each edition.

Ownership has changed several times. Krause Publications acquired Gun Digest in 1994 and moved it to Iola, Wisconsin; F+W Media bought Krause in 2002; and Caribou Media acquired Gun Digest in 2018. Today the brand is based in Appleton, Wisconsin. Beyond the annual, it publishes monthly Gun Digest Magazine, which grew out of the Gun List (bought in 1982) in 2006, along with reference books, and it launched GunDigest.com in 2001. For collectors, older Gun Digest annuals are a valuable record of what guns were made and sold in a given year.
