About Ruffed Grouse Society
The Ruffed Grouse Society (RGS) is a forest wildlife conservation organization for upland bird hunters. It was incorporated on October 24, 1961, in Monterey, Virginia. Its founders were Bruce R. Richardson Jr., Seybert Beverage and Dixie L. Shumate Jr. Its focus is young forest habitat, which is the early successional woodland that ruffed grouse, American woodcock and many songbirds and game species need. RGS was reorganized in 1977, when it restated its mission and greatly expanded its fundraising. It works with private landowners and state and federal agencies on habitat projects based on sound science, including active forest management.
In February 2014 RGS created the American Woodcock Society as a branch of the organization. The new branch carried its habitat work and upland hunting outreach into regions with few grouse but many wintering woodcock, especially in the South. The combined group now operates as the Ruffed Grouse Society and American Woodcock Society. For hunters, RGS is a leading voice for healthy, actively managed forests that support huntable bird populations and keep the bird hunting tradition alive.
