About Ready Aim Fire
Ready, Aim, Fire! Small Arms Ammunition in the Battle of Gettysburg is a 1993 study by Dean S. Thomas, published by Thomas Publications of Gettysburg. It examines the bullets and cartridges actually fired by Union and Confederate soldiers during the three-day battle in July 1863, the largest battle ever fought in North America, and ties them to the weapons each side carried.
The 76-page, 8.5 by 11 inch softcover includes 34 drawings and more than 375 bullet and cartridge specimens used by the North and South at Gettysburg. An appendix lays out the organization of the Army of the Potomac at Gettysburg and the primary armament of each Union regiment, a practical tool for anyone trying to connect a recovered bullet to the unit that may have fired it. The book was a forerunner of Thomas’s much larger Round Ball to Rimfire series, which began in 1997 and grew into a multi-volume encyclopedia of Civil War small arms ammunition.
