About History and Development of Small Arms Ammunition, Volume 2
Volume Two of George A. Hoyem’s The History and Development of Small Arms Ammunition, published by Armory Publications in 1982, covers the black powder centerfire military cartridges and rifles of the period from about 1866 to 1885. Those two decades saw the world’s armies move from muzzleloaders and early conversions to purpose-built metallic cartridge breechloaders, and the book documents that transition nation by nation.
The 330-page, 8.5 by 11 inch case-bound volume illustrates and describes more than 600 black powder centerfire cartridges and 70 rifles from 29 nations. It follows Volume One, which covered martial long arms from flintlock through rimfire, and precedes Volume Three on British sporting rifle cartridges and Volume Four on American black powder sporting cartridges. Volume Two is now out of print. Hoyem founded Armory Publications in 1980 to publish the series, and the company has since released more than 45 volumes on firearms and ammunition.
