About Dr. Robert Young
Robert B. Young, MD, is a psychiatrist based in Pittsford, New York, an associate clinical professor at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He is one of the most visible physician voices in the gun rights movement through his work with Doctors for Responsible Gun Ownership (DRGO), a project of the Second Amendment Foundation founded in 1994 by Dr. Timothy Wheeler. When Wheeler retired from day-to-day operations, DRGO moved to a team leadership structure on January 1, 2017, with Dr. Young serving as Executive Editor, overseeing the group’s blog, written content and social media.
His writing, published by DRGO and outlets such as AmmoLand, argues that proposals like universal background checks, magazine limits and registration burden responsible owners while doing little to reduce crime, and that suicide and mass shootings are better addressed through mental health reform. He has also spoken out against physicians questioning patients about firearm ownership outside their clinical expertise, an issue at the center of Florida’s Firearm Owners’ Privacy Act litigation.
