About Pope and Young Club
The Pope and Young Club is the recognized record-keeping body for North American big game taken with a bow and arrow, much as the Boone and Crockett Club is for firearms. It was formally founded on January 27, 1961. Bowyer and bowhunting advocate Glenn St. Charles was its first chairman. The club grew out of a bowhunting records program that St. Charles helped develop in the 1950s through the National Field Archery Association. It is named for Dr. Saxton Pope and Art Young, two early 20th-century pioneers of modern bowhunting. Fred Bear was among its founding members. An early goal was to show state fish and game agencies that archery was an effective way to take big game, which helped build support for archery seasons across the country.
Today the club is a nonprofit conservation and bowhunting organization that promotes fair chase ethics and bowhunting heritage. To be entered, an animal must be measured by an official scorer and come with a signed Fair Chase Affidavit. As of 2022, the club reported more than 120,000 big game records on file. Glenn St. Charles died in Seattle in September 2010 at age 98.
