About GeorgiaCarry.org
GeorgiaCarry.org (GCO) is Georgia’s grassroots gun rights organization, incorporated in the state on February 2, 2007, with a companion GCO Foundation incorporated on February 11, 2008. Led by president Kelly Kennett with attorney John R. Monroe as vice president, the group combines lobbying at the Georgia General Assembly with an aggressive litigation program. By July 2008 it had already brought at least 13 state and federal lawsuits, challenging local park bans, airport rules and police stops of lawfully armed citizens, and its attorneys filed an amicus brief in District of Columbia v. Heller.
GCO helped craft House Bill 89, signed by Governor Sonny Perdue on May 14, 2008, which allowed eligible adults to carry a firearm anywhere in a private vehicle and let license holders carry in many restaurants, state parks and on public transportation. Its court wins include a ruling that Coweta County could not regulate firearm carry in parks and a 2008 consent order in Richmond County finding that the seizure of a soldier’s openly carried pistol violated the Fourth Amendment. As of August 2014 GCO reported more than 8,500 dues-paying members. Georgia went on to adopt permitless carry in 2022.
