SureFire, LLC is a Fountain Valley, California, maker of tactical flashlights, weapon-mounted lights, laser sights, suppressors and high-capacity magazines. Its founder, Dr. John Matthews, started Newport Corporation, an industrial laser and photonics company, in 1969. After developing a laser sight, he and partners Peter Hauk and Ed Reynolds founded Laser Products Corporation on October 17, 1979, as a spin-off, producing some of the first commercially available laser sights for firearms.
The company gained national exposure when it supplied shotgun laser sights to the LAPD and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department for the 1984 Summer Olympics and provided the laser sight seen in The Terminator that same year. In 1985 it introduced its first SureFire-branded product, a handgun-mounted light, helping create the weapon light category now standard on duty and defensive firearms. Laser Products became SureFire, LLC in 2000. Over the years the company expanded into suppressors and 60- and 100-round rifle magazines, and it supplies military and law enforcement users worldwide. Matthews remains president and CEO, and SureFire reported about $148 million in revenue in 2021.
