- July 30th, 1619 – Virginia’s first gun control law regulated the sale of firearms to Native American = First General Assembly of Jamestown
Jim Crow laws
Passed in 8 states (mostly in the South) after the Civil War because the racists did not want the newly emancipated slaves to own firearms
- Feb 3, 1813 – Kentucky = ban overturned in court in 1850
- March 25, 1813 – Louisiana
- Jan 14, 1820 – Indiana
- 1833 – Georgia enacts a law that provides, “it shall not be lawful for any free person of colour in this state, to own, use, or carry fire arms of any description whatever …… that the free person of colour, so detected in owning, using, or carrying fire arms, shall receive upon his bare back, thirty-nine lashes, and that the fire arms so found in the possession of said free person of colour, shall be exposed to public sale ….”
