About Remington Arms
Remington is the oldest gunmaker in the United States. Eliphalet Remington began gunsmithing in New York in 1816, and in 1828 the operation moved to the Ilion site that served as Remington’s home for nearly two centuries. On March 7, 1888 the family sold the company to Marcellus Hartley and partners, and it became the Remington Arms Company; it merged with Union Metallic Cartridge in 1910 to form Remington-UMC. DuPont acquired Remington in 1934 and owned it until 1993. Remington’s 1962 Model 700 bolt-action rifle became one of the most popular hunting rifles in America.
Cerberus Capital Management bought Remington in 2007 and built the Freedom Group, renamed Remington Outdoor Company in 2015. After bankruptcy filings in 2018 and again on July 28, 2020, the company’s assets were sold separately: the firearms business went to the Roundhill Group, which operates it as RemArms, LLC; Marlin went to Sturm, Ruger & Co.; and the Remington brand and Lonoke, Arkansas ammunition plant went to Vista Outdoor. The historic Ilion factory closed in March 2024, and in November 2024 Remington’s ammunition business passed to the Czechoslovak Group. As of 2026 Remington firearms are made by RemArms, which licenses the Remington name, while Remington ammunition is owned by CSG.
