About John David Dingell Jr.
John David Dingell Jr. (1926-2019) represented Michigan in the U.S. House of Representatives from December 13, 1955, to January 3, 2015. Born in Colorado Springs, Colorado, he succeeded his father in Congress and on February 11, 2009, passed the record for the longest tenure in the history of the House. He is recognized as the longest-serving member of Congress in U.S. history.
Dingell was an avid hunter and one of the most prominent pro-gun Democrats of his era. He strongly opposed gun control, served on the board of the National Rifle Association, and for many years held an A+ NRA rating. He helped write the exemption that kept firearms out of the 1972 Consumer Product Safety Act, which means the Consumer Product Safety Commission has no authority over guns. President Barack Obama awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2014. His wife, Debbie Dingell, won his seat in the 2014 election. He died at his home in Dearborn, Michigan, on February 7, 2019.
