About Hunting with Heroes

Hunting with Heroes is a Wyoming nonprofit that offers guided hunts and other outdoor experiences to disabled veterans. According to a 2019 Cowboy State Daily report, it was founded in 2013 by Dan Currah, a former U.S. Army signal corps officer, and Colton Sasser, a veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan. Sasser was injured in 2012 when his vehicle struck an IED. The group planned 10 hunts in its first year and completed 17. It hosted about 230 hunts in 2018, and by late 2019 its leaders estimated more than 1,000 hunts since founding. Applicants must have a service-connected disability rating of at least 50 percent. The program is open to veterans nationwide, and many participants travel to Wyoming from out of state.

Much of the program runs on donated big game licenses. Under Wyoming law, a hunter who cannot use a license may give it to the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. The department then reissues it at no cost to a veteran with a service-connected disability of 50 percent or more, or to a person who permanently uses a wheelchair. Each recipient must be sponsored by a qualifying nonprofit. In 2015, House Bill 155 amended this law, which took effect July 1, 2015. Private landowners and volunteer guides provide the access and hands-on help.
